Having been unable to build a new venue in the Bay Area, the Oakland Athletics have signed a binding agreement to purchase land in Las Vegas for a retractable roof ballpark.
According to A's president Dave Kaval, the team closed a deal last week to purchase the 49-acre site where the team plans to build a 30,000-35,000 seating stadium close to the Las Vegas Strip.
A public-private partnership will be formed between the A's and Nevada and Clark County to fund the stadium. It is expected that the A's will break ground by next year and will move to their new home by 2027, according to Kaval.
A franchise that originated in 1901 as the Philadelphia Athletics would move to Las Vegas for the fourth time.
